The chlorination/disinfection process involves the pre flushing/swabbing of the pipe, introduction of a high strength chlorine solution, a period of standing, further flushing and another period of sitting before collection of final onsite parameters & water sample. The waste water is dechlorinated.
ELP Scientific uses proportional chlorine dosing equipment to ensure an accurate and even chlorine residual throughout the length of the pipe. Onsite chlorine residuals are electronically measured and microbiological samples are analysed in A UKAS laboratory.
UK water companies require new ‘oversize’ service pipes (the pipe that joins the property to stopcock or meter) to be chlorinated and microbiologically tested prior to connection to their infrastructure. ‘Oversized’ pipes are either those above a certain diameter or over a certain length – different water companies have different definitions of what is oversize in their area. Before connecting to the mains to make it live they’ll need to see a chlorination certificate and the sample results of the microbiology test. This is to demonstrate that the new pipe work is free from bacteria that could cause illness to those served by it.
Chlorination/disinfection/sterilisation services can also be provided for many water assets such as internal plumbing, storage tanks and private distribution systems. This includes marine fresh water tanks as used on private and commercial yachts, boats and ships.
Note to installers – it is very important that all pipes are installed following strict hygienic practices and ideally undertaken by an appropriately qualified contractor. This should include dedicated clean-water-only tools & clothing for the job, sterile fittings and an extremely high level of workmanship. Pipes should be securely capped (not taped/kinked over) during storage and installation. Once installed the tails should be left fitted with cap-ends to prevent vermin/detritus ingress. Any contamination, no matter how slight , may cause the microbiological sample taken after the chlorination process to fail. This can cause delays and additional expense in repeating the process.
